FOOTBALL AT SYS

The SYS football experience is primarily competitive in nature with the goal of preparing the student athlete with the tools necessary to participate at the high school level. Teamwork and sportsmanship are stressed in a community based setting and are hallmarks of the SYS experience.

The average SYS football participant has the opportunity to participate for upwards to 8 years within the SYS system.. There were 52 teams across the 4 age divisions in SYS in 2003.

The SYS Football Season Sign-ups begin June 1st and the playing season begins the last week of July with practices scheduled Monday through Friday or up to 5 days a week a maximum of 2 hours per practice.

A Jamboree is held the last half of August with each team playing a quarter. In September, the practice schedule backs off to 3 days a week with a maximum of 5 hours per week. This practice schedule is maintained throughout the balance of the season that ends the 2nd week of November. . The SYS game schedule is made up of a 4 home games and 4 away games for a total of 8 games during the regular season. The top 8 finishers in each age divisions then participate in a 3 round playoff schedule that culminates with the SYS Championships.

Monday Night J.V. Football

In 2000, SYS began funding Monday Night J.V. football, which was met with great success. The first season began with about 35 games scheduled. In 2002 approximately 100 were played. By offering regularly scheduled and officiated games on Monday nights, kids who may not have seen playing time in Saturdays games get their chance to hone their skills in real game situations enhancing the overall SYS experience for both parents and kids alike.

AGES DIVISIONS

Each member Area of Shelby Youth Sports offers football in 4 age divisions as condition of Association membership. To better ensure the safety of participants and better guarantee a level playing field SYS has strictly enforced weight limit parameters in the backfield for each age division.
