7TH AND 8TH GRADE FOOTBALL
Elmore Park will have a Senior Football team this coming 2008 Football Season

Coaches are in place, uniforms have been ordered and everything is set to go. If you are a 7th or 8th grader that will not turn 14 prior to Sept. 30th you are eligible to play for the Pack.

There are a lot of advantages to playing 7th and 8th grade football at Elmore Park.

Here Are Just A Few:

1. A 8 game schedule with a 3 rounds of playoffs: Other leagues only have 5 or 6 games.

2. No year round practices: You begin practice in late July and the season is over the 2nd week in November.

3. Squad Size Is Smaller: Because squad size is smaller you get the chance to hone your skills and get more playing time.

4.Low Cost: Yeah some say they are free to play but pack on extra charges once you start. We tell you what its going to cost and thats it.

5.Not getting Defined By The High School Coaches: By playing in the other league the high school coaches may decide where you are going to play early as the 7th or 8th grade. With SYS you get the chance to develop at your own pace, still have fun and try a lot of positions. You might not get this chance with the other league.

6.Eligible for SYS Scholarship Moneys: If you participate with SYS you are automatically eligible for participation in SYS's Scholarship Program.

8.Learn the Fundamentals that will allow you to play at the High School Level: Many of our former participants have gone on to sucessfull high-school football careers. Just ask our coaches......

GREAT NEWS ABOUT CHEERLEADING AT ELMORE PARK

Come join the Elmore Park Packers for our 41st Cheer Season
If you are a past Elmore Park participant or will be new to the program, you need to make plans to sign-up at one of the upcoming sign-up dates. Participation is open ot girls age 6-14. New pariticipants will need to bring a recent picture and a copy of the birth certificate.
Elmore Park Cheer in 08 will be going recreational. This means participation will be much more affordable with a lower fee schedule. Since there will be no coaches fees and one set price for the uniform package we hope to bring the cheer experience into the reach of many more participants.
Altogether including uniform, booster club fees, SYS Fees and minor incidentals, we are looking at a Fee Schedule of $135 per participant. Multi- participant family discounts will be available as well as fundraising opportunities that can bring the cost of pariticipation down to zero.
Another added benefit of our program going recreational it the practice schedule will be greatly reduced and our only compeitition will be the local SYS Cheer-OFF that is mostly funded by SYS.

ELMORE PARK 2008 AAA SYS TRACK CHAMPIONS
Congrats to our coaches and participants on their performance at the 2008 SYS Track & Field Championships.

Elmore Park garnered 34 medals and 23 place ribbons placing in a total of 48 events.

Say that’s great, well consider this, Elmore Park won the AAA SYS Championship. No mean feat.

But heres the kicker….if that was not impressive enough, 27 out of our 59 participants were Rookies.

Now this tells me a couple of things:

1. We had parental support of the kids and the program that made such a outcome possible.

2. We had coaches who worked with each other for the best team and participant outcome possible.

3. And we had a bunch if kids who showed up with no experience, a lot of heart who through raw talent & potential, parental support and great coaching pulled off a phenomenal win.

For anyone wanting to relive some of the memories from this past season you can in a couple ways.

We’ve posted the results of SYS Track Championships, our participant medal and ribbon count and the current SYS and Elmore Park held track records on the Track Records link at the Elmore Homepage. You can check it out at www.elmoreparkpackers.com

Numerous photos from this past season as well as the Championships have been posted to the 2008 Track and Field photos link. You can find the link on the homepage as well.

We would also encourage anyone who has any photos from the 2008 season to take the time out to upload them to the site. Some memories should be shared and we would like to thank Kelanie Ware and Angela Robinson for the lion share of photo uploads to the site to this season.

A recap of the 2008 season would not be complete without some words from one of Elmore Parks biggest supporters Area Director DeShana Wallace:

To All,

I would like to take the time to say, "Thank you for your time and dedication throughout the track season"!!! It took time and patience, in which each and everyone of you have proven you have plenty of . You and our children did a F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S job in the championships. I'm so proud to be your Area Director. Remember, our Track Banquet is June 7th 3pm - 7pm at Elmore Park Middle School. Lastly, have an awesome Memorial Day weekend !!!

We would ask you to take the time out to share your positive remembrances of a phenomenal season by going to the Elmore Park Message Board and just let loose, poor it out and let our coaches, Booster Club and Directors Staff know how much they mean.

Folks, they do it for the kids and it would be wonderful for our parents, participants and everyone involved to take a moment to let them know how much what they do means.

MARCH 25TH 2008

LETTER FROM OUR BOOSTER CLUB PRESIDENT: HELPING TO MAKE EPP A GREAT PLACE TO BE
Dear Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to say Welcome and Thank You in allowing us here at Elmore Park to teach the fundamentals of track to your child.

My Name is Jimmy Ferguson the new Booster Club President and also a proud parent/guardian like you. This is my first year with the program and I am very excited to be surrounded by a great group of people. My son Riley Ferguson played Pee wee football over the summer/fall for the first time which was a great experience. My younger son Brayden will start this year and boy is he ready.

As a parent this past year I noticed opportunities with the program, especially when it came to how parents were always asked to come out of pocket and help the Booster Club with funding. Let's face it the school system asks enough already. As a parent I want the best for my child and I want them to be able to say (when they grow up) that their Mother and I were involved.

(Parent Support)

I ask for this opportunity to become President during the Football banquet last year and my focus is to turn to the community for monies the Booster Club needs. The committee in place this year is, “Dedicated to having the best year ever here at Elmore Park and more to come”. We have turned to the community and have gotten a great response, one in particular, I have gotten Lowe's to donate a 10x8 fiberglass storage building to be used for a concession stand!! This will be a great addition to the program. There will be fund-raising and I will ask for the parents/children's help this way. There will be rewards given to the child that surpasses the rest during our fund-raisers, maybe like a gift card to International Pizza Company!

There will be raffles throughout the season and donations will be asked to participate. All proceeds will help with operating expensive of the Booster Club.

My 15 years in management has taught me, "My Employees are My Customers" You are my Customers, Let me Help You by Supporting Me and my Team Throughout the years to come and make Elmore Park Packers a Great place to be.

Thank You,

Jimmy Ferguson
President, Booster Club

MARCH 25TH 08

TIPS FOR THE UPCOMING TRACK SEASON
Its hard to believe that the first track meet of the 2008 season is a few days away. We've all been practicing in the evenings for the past 3 weeks. Everyone has been working hard in getting ready to compete. So lets not forget some key the things that can make the track meets ahead and the year safer, shorter and a much more pleasant experience for us all.

Don't Forget the Sunscreen

Its Spring now, the Sun in higher on the horizon and more of its rays are hitting the ground. We've been practicing in the evenings and its a easy thing to overlook at this first Meet so lets not go away from a winning day with a nasty sunburn by forgetting the sunscreen. PF 20 or greater is recommended and don't forget hats and jackets. It may be a high of 70 but the wind chill early in the day can make it uncomfortable when your out in the open.

Fruits, Veggies and Water

Lets all make sure that we pack up some Fruits, Veggies and Water for our Student Athletes to snack on throughout the day. Track meets make for a 4 to 6 hour day including travel time and with many of the sites at remote locations, the typical concession fare at an SYS Track Meet is not going to meet the nutritional needs of our participants. Yes, we want to support our member Areas that are hosting the meets by frequenting their concessions but the kids will between event running fuel. Grapes, bannanas, apples, carrots, strawberrys as well as oranges and string cheese make for great inbetween race snacks and don't forget the water. Water may or may not be available at the finish line so make sure to bring your own.

Guns Up at 9 A.M. Lets Pitch In and Help

SYS is an all volunteer affair. Yeah you paid your money for your child to participate but without your support, the meets can make for a long drawn out day. At the begining of each Meet, you will hear a call go out for parent volunteers to man everything from the stop watches to the longjump pit. By volunteering, you can make your day pass faster. You will also get a birdseye view of the competition you would otherwise miss by being in the stands. So help make for a great day by pitching in. For  over 40 years, Elmore Park has had an active tradition of volunterism so lets do our part in keeping this great tradition alive at Elmore Park. Remember, first guns up is at 9 a.m.. That means the meet is scheuduled to begin. 8:30 is when the first calls goes out for the first events, so you need to be at the Track Site no later than 8:30 unless instructed otherwise by your Coach. If you see things moving slowly at the begining of meet , its ususally because of a lack of volunteer support. If the call goes out for volunteers, do your part this season and pitch in and help.

Sportsmanship

Sportmanship is key to a winning season and even winning at life. Yes we are out to compete and yes we are out to win but instilling in our children a sense of sportsmanship and fair play make us all winners at the game of life. There will be controversy, bad judgement calls that should be considered part of the the game. That said, never approach a parent, coach or child on yours or the opposing team in an aggressive manner. Same goes for game officials which you will see in white or black hats administering the days events. If you run into a problems address it with your coach. If you are not satisfied move up the chain of command to your Area Director. Lets cheer our hearts out and be there at the finish line to support out kids win or lose. Also remember that parents are not allowed on the track unless they are working the meet.

REMEMBERING WE ARE GUESTS

Each week of Track season Shelby Youth Sports is the guest of Shelby County or Memphis City School Systems. This means that we can end up in situations where we might not be invited back to a school or even be allowed to participate if we don't do our part to take care of the facilities in our charge. Its important to remember as guests to leave the venues in as good a shape or better than we found them. Lets all do our part to take care of our track sites.

Treating All Children As We Would Our Own

There are going to upwards to several hundred kids at each track meet. Some may not be as well supervised as others and well.....as we know even with our own, its hard to keep up with them on Meet Day. So lets keep a close eye on our youngsters," treat them as you would your own" tell them to quit running in the bleachers, or quit hanging out in the bathrooms and stay out from under the bleachers and oh yeah....no throwing food from the top of the stands.

Most of what you will run into you should be able to handle yourself, if you ever run into a situation where you feel unconfortable feel free to find an "SYS Game Official" head coach or your Area Director. and let them know your concerns.

Hey Guys, Its time to dust off those running shoes and start getting ready for the 08 Track & Field Season.
Practice has begun so now is the time to makeyour plans to participate.

EPP had a great record setting 07 season and we fully expect more of the same in 08.
Participation is open to boys and girls ages 6-15 and is a great way to get back into condition after the long winters layoff.
A special note to our football participants. It is highly recommended that you take the time to participate in track. You get to hang out with your team-mates and at the same time work on conditioning for the upcoming football season. The importance of showing up in the first day of practice in July in shape cannot be over emphasized.

Another great thing about Track is there is something for everyone regardless of skill level. You don't have to be a speed demon or run a 4 minute mile to participate. SYS Track & Field has skill level participation for novice and advanced participants. The important thing is to get out there, participate and get moving.

JULY 10TH

SENIOR FOOTBALL AT ELMORE PARK
Elmore Park will have a Senior Football team this coming 2007 Football Season

HAVING A SAFE TRACK & FIELD SEASON
SYS now requires anyone being treated by a physician to get a medical release. The SYS Medical Release Form can now be found at the Forms Link at the Elmore Park Homepage.

This requirement is specific to anyone being treated for asthama. Any other participants who are being treated for ADD or ADHD and are being prescribed the current line of medications used to treat this condition may want to consider seeking a physical and medical release.

The article below covers the upcoming Black Box warning that is soon to be required on many of the ADD and ADHD medications currently in use.

Advisers Want Black-Box Warning for ADHD Drugs

Donna Young

GAITHERSBURG, MD, 10 February 2006 — In an unexpected move that appeared to stun drug regulators, a federal advisory panel yesterday voted 8–7 to add a black-box warning to the labeling of stimulants used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to alert prescribers about cardiovascular risks associated with use of the drugs.

The Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee also voted in favor of requiring makers of ADHD stimulants to develop medication guides, which pharmacists would distribute when dispensing the medications, to inform patients about cardiovascular risks in ADHD medication use.

Panelists decided to exclude from the vote the ADHD medication atomoxetine, or Strattera, which is a selective norepinephrine-reuptake inhibitor made by Eli Lilly and Co.

The advisers were most concerned about the known effects of sympathomimetic drugs on blood pressure, coronary artery disease, and structural cardiac abnormalities.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received reports of more than 20 deaths associated with use of ADHD drugs, reviewers said.

But, said Kate Gelperin, a medical officer in FDA's Office of Drug Safety, cardiovascular signals in ADHD adverse events reported to the agency were "not conclusive."

About 1.5 million adults and 2.5 million children take ADHD medications, FDA safety reviewers told the panel.

Use of ADHD medications is on the rise, especially in adults, said Andrew Mosholder, a medical officer in FDA's Office of Drug Safety.

There was a 90 percent increase in adult use of the drugs over the past three years, he told the advisers. About 10 percent of adult users of ADHD medications are over age 50, Mosholder added.

ADHD medication use in children peaks around ages 9–12, and then drops off, he said.

Methylphenidate products, marketed by Novartis under the brand name Ritalin, are the most frequently prescribed ADHD medications, Mosholder said.

"Over the last decade or so, we've seen an enormous rise in the use of these drugs now to the point that 10 percent of 10 year olds are getting treated" for ADHD, said Steven Nissen, director of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio—the panelist who proposed the black-box vote. "I have grave concerns about the direction we are going in with the mass use of these drugs and the potential for harm," he said.

Regulators had not planned a vote at yesterday's advisory committee meeting, which was convened to discuss approaches for studying ADHD drugs and cardiovascular risks.

"We specifically sought this committee's advice on how to design a study that's going to help us better define cardiovascular risks," said Tom Laughren, director of FDA's Division of Psychiatry Products. "We desperately need to try and figure out a way to systematically confirm whether or not there is a risk. I don't think we're there yet for a black box."

ADHD medications approved for marketing in the United States already include warnings in product labeling that caution prescribers about treating patients with underlying medical conditions that might be compromised by increases in blood pressure or heart rate, he said.

Amphetamine salts, marketed by Shire as Adderall, and the company's extended-release form of the drug, Adderall XR, include warnings about reports of sudden death in children with structural cardiac abnormalities, Laughren said. The labeling warns that amphetamine salts should not be used in children or adults with structural cardiac abnormalities, he added.

"We've more recently asked all the other stimulant manufacturers to add similar language to the warning section of their labels so that all of the stimulant drugs, at least, will have consistent language," Laughren said.

But, he cautioned, "this is not a contraindication....It's an alert to clinicians to pay attention to both the effects that slight raises in blood pressure or heart rate might have on patients with underlying disorders, and to be cautious. We feel that this language is appropriate given our current level of knowledge about these drugs."

Laughren told the drug safety panel that FDA reserves the black box—the agency's strongest warning—for "risk that is very clearly established as causal."

"I don't think we are there yet with this cardiovascular risk," he said.

But Curt D. Furberg, professor of medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., argued that the warnings and precautions section of drug labeling has little impact on prescribing.

"In order to get a message across to physicians and patients, you need to step it up a bit," he said. "I agree that we don't have final information on harm. But sometimes what's missing in the labeling is a statement that these drugs may have a harmful effect, there's incomplete information, and advise caution. I think it would be reasonable to elevate the warning to the public and add a black box to it."

Henri R. Manasse Jr., executive vice president for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, said he voted in favor of the black-box warning because "I think this is a serious issue related to the practice behavior both for pharmacists and physicians, and I think the only way we are going to get the attention of the medical community and the pharmacy community in sharing with patients what the potential risks are with these medications is through the black-box warning."

Nissen expressed similar sentiments.

"The only way you get people to pay attention is when you put [warnings] in a black box," he said. "It just doesn't seem to get there if you don't do something pretty dramatic. I want to cause people's hands to tremble a little bit before they write that script. And the only way I know to do that is to get their attention with a black box. That's the reality."

Laughren reminded the panel of drug safety experts that the agency's Pediatric Advisory Committee, whom regulators, at a press conference held late yesterday, described as more familiar with ADHD pediatric patients, plans to meet on March 22 to discuss the medications. The Psychopharmacologic Drugs Advisory Committee plans to meet on March 23 to discuss modafinil, which is under review for marketing approval to treat ADHD.

"So this is not the only opportunity for an outside group to give the FDA advice about what to do with labeling," Laughren said.

But panelist Arthur Levin, director of the Center for Medical Consumers, charged that "for us to sit around and talk about this, to have three advisory committee meetings discussing the signals and not to make at the very least a very strong warning to people that there is uncertainty here about the safety of these drugs and that they need to be aware of that pending clarification, I just think is inappropriate, unethical behavior."

ELMORE PARK'S MASCOT: GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTON
I'm sorry to have to report to our membership but Gypsie, our faithfull mascot and all around great dog passed away of old age today.

Anyone who has been with the program over the past several years will remember Gypsie as the sweet natured loving Great Dane owned by KerriAnn, Donnie and Andrew Moore, who on game days donned the Packer Green and Gold in support of the program. She was loved and cared for by
